Family Support

Home-Start Oldham Ltd
Home-Start Oldham offers a befriending service for parents and families with at least one child under the age of 5.

Home-Start volunteers visit families regularly, in their own homes, usually once a week for between two and four hours.

The visits are flexible and the volunteer and family together decide when the visits should take place and how the time will be spent.

Sometimes a parent may want someone to listen, someone to talk to about their concerns or problems or even just someone with whom to share an adult conversation! At another time they may want some more practical support such as help to play with the children or to get the family to the shops. Volunteers are not babysitters or home helps so any practical help is given as a friend would.

Families can self refer or be referred by friends, relatives, statutory or other voluntart agencies. The only conditions are that the family agrees to being referred and that the family have a child under 5.

Home-Start volunteers are all parents or carers themselves, who support parents as one parent supporting another. All volunteers are police checked and complete a ten week training course before being matched with a family. Any one interested in volunteering for Home-Start should contact Home-Start directly or speak to the SureStart Volunteer and Training Officer.

Library Service

Library Services
Your child is never to young to join your local library. Oldham libraries will welcome your child from birth.

Sharing stories, rhymes and pictures will help your children to gain confidence as they talk about what they see and hear. Reading and sharing stories is not only great fun, it is one of the best ways to give your children a head start in life.

Oldham libraries have a wonderful range of pre-school books for you to borrow.

Board books are chunky and sturdy, making them easier for even the youngest child. Filled with pictures and some simple text, they are an ideal introduction to reading.

First Word Books contain information about the world around us. Here you will find simple, repetative text, nursery rhymes, ABC's and counting books.

Picture books offer a wide range of books, from ery simple words to longer stories.

Story time tapes, either with or without books can be borrowed without charge on a child's ticket.

Situation books are designed to act as starting points for you to discuss many new experiences with your child, from having a new baby in the family to starting school.

Information about local playgroups, schools, doctors, and organisations etc can be found at your local library and staff are always available to give you help.

Oldham libraries run events throughout the year for pre-school children, which are attended by parents and carers, nurseries and playgroups.

We also have pre-school collections, which can be borrowed by nursery and playgroup leaders from our pre-school service, based at Fitton Hill Library.

During the month of June, Oldham Libraries are holding promotional Storytime and Craft sessions for babies, pre-school children and their parens and carers.

For more information, please contact your local library or Beverly Fiztsimmons on 0161 911 4080
